Shortly after I same to Hongkong, Mr. A.J.M.Fletcher, thɛn acting as Colonial Decretary, infomed me that it was the desire of the un-official members of the Legislative Council that a good motor car of British make should be purchased at publie expense for use of the Governor and that the running expenses of the car should be paid from revormie.

I replied that I could not under present circumstances propose such a vote, but that it would in my opinion be proper if the mombers of the Finance Committee made, in respect of the running of the Governor's car, an arrangement similar to that in Ceylon, namely that the wages of one chauffeur and the cost of petrol and of motor tyres consumed in running the Governor's cara should be paid from rovente, This suggestion was considered by the Finanos Committee of the Legislative Council on the lith Jammary, 1926, and it received their unanimous consent.

I sugest, therefore, that a eum of

two thousand dollars (2000) should be soceptád so representing in a round figure that proportion of the total use of these motor cars devoted to the puulio service, and I shall be glad to know whether you approve of my placing a vote for that acount before the Finance Committee.

I have the honour to be,

Sir

Your meat obedient humble servant,

(sd.) C. Clementi
